Lessons

I've been teaching guitar privately in Portland for 20 years, full-time since 2004.  I currently have a small studio close-in SE where I meet with students Mon-Fri.  I work with folks from all across the spectrum -- complete beginners to experienced guitarists, young and old.  My teaching style is based on the way that I learned, taking a more intuitive and practical approach.  I believe in the importance of fundamentals as a firm foundation for whatever style a person wants to play, and work with my students to develop an organized way of thinking about musical things, whether they're chords, scales, improvisation or songwriting.  I never learned to read or write music, nor did I receive a formal musical education.  My message as a teacher is based on 20+ years worth of gigs, making records and writing and performing in a variety of genres including jazz, vintage country, 'Hot Club' style gypsy jazz and rock and roll.  My rates are very reasonable, the lessons relaxed yet focused.  I work with each student's individual strengths and weaknesses, encourage their interests and help them to meet their goals.  Needless to say, I love to teach.  You can email me directly with any questions, or to schedule a lesson.
